THE ORCHARD

Pears and Figs

Fruit has replaced the Kitchen Garden. Hopefully some day there will be enough to supply everyone that wants to buy. Keep in mind that production of these species begins in late July and may extend to late October. Pears are the first option. There are two productive trees that are over 40 years old. In Bandera County one of the first settlers Amasa Clark planted an orchard that is over 100 years old and still producing. The other trees in the orchard were planted in 2017 and 2018 and are just beginning to produce. Figs are a common, but border line crop in the Hill Country because they don’t like cold weather, tend to freeze and have to come back from its roots. Pear ripening starts in late July and continues through August and September. Figs start ripening in mid July.
